What is sustainable agriculture?

Sustainable agriculture strives for harmony with the natural environment, while also considering issues of human health, as well as societal and economic well-being. A sustainable farm seeks to be environmentally and socially responsible without sacrificing its ability to earn profit. Producers practicing sustainable agriculture:

  • Use natural methods to control pests, including beneficial insects, careful weather monitoring and scouting
  • Use the least toxic pesticides when natural methods don't work
  • Improve soil by methods such as crop rotation and cover crops
  • Protect water resources
  • Provide wildlife habitat
  • Take into consideration quality of life issues for their farm workers and their communities when making daily farm management decisions
  • Continually improve their farming practices to make them more economically viable, environmentally sound and socially just
