Featured Chapter: Southeastern (Chester County), PA
November 2007

Throughout the month of November and early December, Southeastern PA Buy Fresh Buy Local will be sponsoring the Down to Earth Exhibit in West Chester, PA. The exhibit (held at the Arts Scene gallery) will display juried potters who work with the earth to make objects to be used with food, and furniture makers who create surfaces intended to be used with food, creating a sort of "triptych" of food, vessel and foundation. Artists are "local," living within approximately 100 miles of Chester County.

The mission of Down to Earth is to:

  • Display functional art that is intended to enhance the culinary experience;
  • Celebrate the intrinsic value of eating locally grown food using handmade art;
  • Build community by introducing people to their local farmers and artists.
  • Produce food and nurture growth requires farmers' diligence and attention to the earth - artists create forms that contain, present, and enhance food. Farmers and artists transform what the earth provides, which in turn nourishes our bodies and our souls.

  • The event will kickoff Friday, November 9, 7-10pm at the Arts Scene with local foods, music, and local artist presentations, and there are several more events scheduled throughout the exhibit. During these events, the Southeastern PA Buy Fresh Buy Local chapter will receive 15% of the exhibit item sales. And throughout the exhibit, bids can be placed on special pieces of artwork. Bidding ends on Dec 8 at 8pm. Artists will receive half of the winning bid monies, and the Southeastern PA BFBL chapter will receive the rest. (Artist: Joyce Nagata, Westtown, PA)
